Texas is a weird place.

I recently moved from Philadelphia where I’ve lived my entire life to Austin Texas to work for IBM. I have to admit, this is one of the strangest places I’ve ever been to. Not because Philadelphia is the definition of normal in it’s own, but because very stereotype about Texas couldn’t be more true, but some other things as well.

1. Closet fags
I’ve had at least 3 guys hit on me and one even try and make out with me while I’ve been here. That’s 4 guys more then my record back home in Philadelphia. (My current record before coming here was 0) So the whole Texas is full of steers and queers would check out in it’s own.

2. Cowboys
Yes, everyone wears cowboy boots, yes every says “Y’all” yes, every has huge belt buckles and can tie a lasso and can ride a horse and has a six shooter and every other cowboy stereotype. It’s all here.

3. The homeless
For those who aren’t South Park fans there is an episode of South Park where homeless overrun the town and destroy it. Austin is full of fucking homeless people. Everywhere, all the time. I can’t drive to work without having my window knocked on and asked for change at least 2-3 times. Walking to eat dinner I get asked for change at least 5 times. It’s ridiculous. I even had a band of 5 homeless people playing an acoustic guitar dance around me while asking for change. Like what the fuck, seriously?

4. Texans have that state pride “Don’t mess with Texas” attitude
Yea, they have all that obnoxious pride in their state just like everyone thinks they do. You can’t talk ill of Texas and not have someone fucking trying to start a fight over it.

5. I talk funny.
Yes, I talk funny to Texans for the way I say “Coffee” and “talk” and it’s “funny” to “them.” So basically every time someone says “Y’all” I laugh and when they ask me why, I simply respond with “Oh, all you texas “talk” funny to me.” Aside from such most people treat me like some kind of fucking foreigner in Texas. Like, I’m from fucking Pakistan or some shit.

6. Everyone is a republican
I didn’t know there was such a thing as a republican college student, but apparently I was wrong, they are the majority political opinion here by a large margin. Go figure for a state that is amazing efficient at executing convicts and giving people guns.

Out of it all there are some good things.
I work for IBM, which is nice. People seem generally impressed at my vocation
It’s warm here. Can’t beat 80 degree days in Febuary.
Mexican Food. Amazing mexican food if you enjoy the genre of food. You can get it mouth destroyingly hot too, which is awesome.

Eh, all in all so far I give texas a 2 out of 10 on enjoyment of living here. One from the weather and one from the Food.

Trip to Austin: Day 1

Well, today my brother Paul and I started out our little trip to Austin, Texas. So I may start my Co-Op with IBM Electrical analysis. First we woke up late, next we proceeded to take our good old time packing my things. Then my parents talked to use needlessly for an hour or so and we were off. Started the drive with In Flames’s “Take this life.” Ended the day with Modest Mouse’s “March in the to the Sea.” Was a nice drive despite the fact that these roads THERE IS NOTHING. I was expecting to see some cities or something, but nothing, just open fields. Very disappointing. But tomorrow we go through Nashville and on Sunday probably Dallas so I’ll get my cities soon enough. Either way, time for a shower and bed, I’m beat.

IBM Programming problems.

Throughout my interview process with IBM and various other companies searching for internships and CO-Op pertinent to my major I came across something amazingly interesting. IBM Austin conducted a phone interview with me to do a CO-Op with them doing algorithm design, software engineering and electrical analysis. They posed to me a very interesting programming problem involving recursive programming and permutations. It was different then what I had seen online for permutation calculation because it was totally dynamic range of array values to permute. So dealing with the unknown and recursion is never fun in my opinion, but after about 4 days of though, frustration and code, I came up with a solution.

The actual wording of what IBM asked of me
” Write a recursive function that takes as input the vector/array of varRange objects defined above and will output all the possible permutations of the variable settings. The preferred language is C++ or Java, and you can use whatever dynamic storage type you want. Only send the function and other helper functions if you have them. I am mainly interested in how you solve it and not whether it is 100% correct.”

So it’s actually nothing new that I left Pepperjam a week ago. But, I wanted to touch a bit on how much fun I did, and did not have working there. A lot of my complaint boil down though to me wanting to be lazy :-p, but you know how that is. I owe Pepperjam a lot actually if it weren’t for Jay and Ray (Director of software development and the lead software engineer) I wouldn’t know half of what I do now. I even picked up Python thanks to Jay. The amount of knowledge I picked up while working for Pepperjam was extensive and very helpful. While a lot of people my age don’t give a shit, I don’t intend to leave college with just a degree. I find it somewhat distressing as well as awesome that so many people in my field that are still in college don’t care about their future. It makes the quality of IT work shitty, but at the same times makes people who actually care stand out that much more.

I think the best thing though I learned about Pepperjam wasn’t really the programming, but it was the business and way the field works. I learned quickly that your college degree means very little in the long run (Hell, our VP of IT never went to college) what means more is where you’ve worked and who you’ve worked for gets you more money and more respect then where you went to college and what your GPA is. While the degree helps you to land more stable management jobs, I’ve met people who do VERY well without a degree and have no desire to ever go back and start or finish one for that matter. It just blows my mind, I really never expected it to turn out this way when I first started, but it really makes me want to bust my ass more outside of my classes to get better because when worse comes to worse that degree is gonna hurt my pocket more then anything else…

Using the Power of AJAX / PHP / Full Text and mySQL:

After a long hiatus in the world of nothing, I’m back. And what better to start my new blog off then to show off an excellent combination of my 3 favorite technologies.

AJAX - Or Asynchronous Javascript. This is a combination of technologies that allows faster loading of pages and a lot of really cool on the fly features.

PHP - If you don’t know what PHP is you’ve been living under a rock. So with that www.php.net.

Full Text and MySQL - Full Text Refers to a feature of mySQL that allows you to search through large amounts of text in an efficient manner. MySQL is one of the most popular open-source online relational database systems available today. www.mysql.com

What am I doing now?
Well, this is where the fun starts. If you run a blog and you want to have a better searching feature then you want your users to be able to search for information inside your posts as well as your title. This allows you to give your users more flexability in finding what they want as well as makes things overall easier. Using mySQL and Full Text will allow you to search through the data in an efficient and easy way. Using PHP and AJAX you can provide for your users an equally fast and easy to use interface. Now, I enjoy using the DOJO Javascript Toolkit which is an excellent and extensive javascript toolkit that makes AJAX calls easier then 1-2-3.

Let’s get started:
For the full text searching to work and for you to really get a feel for how it works, I’m taking a book that I know has a lot of text in it. With that in mind I am using the King James Version of the bible. This and a lot of the full text is taken from the mySQL cookbook because it’s done so well. Only, we are expanding upon it and making it better.

Let’s start by creating the table that we are going to house all the information in.

Now that we have a table to work with let’s populate it with the text and information.

Wow, that’s a lot of information! Next we are going to want to add a full text index to the database. This is accomplished with a very simple query. The Vtext column in the database is our column that holds the majority of the text in the database, so we’re going to index that for full text.

All done! That’s it for SQL for now. Now we’re going to be moving on to the front end of this venture. The AJAX in my opinion is the most crucial part of this whole operation because it’s what the user sees and it’s what the user judges, so it has to be perfect.

The AJAX breaks down to being very easy in my opinion. DOJO does a lot of work and makes AJAX calls and handling stupidly easy. The javascript to handle this all is:

This code automatically initializes the AJAX and gets ready for calls. The HTML behind this is also very easy and to the point.

With that said. That was the hardest HTML ever to paste, thanks word-press for being broken. Anyways from there all the remains is the PHP. The PHP is probably the hardest part for those who aren’t so programming savvy. No need to worry though the PHP is rather strait forward and easy to read in it’s own so here it goes!
